Projector-Based Augmented Reality for In-Situ Support for the Automotive Industry

This research will investigate technologies to facilitate presentation of projected digital Augmented Reality (AR) information onto surfaces in structured work environments. These systems employ laser data projectors and cameras embedded at a location and then view and interact with digital information projected directly onto surfaces within a workspace. This will allow the user to be more effective and efficient in performing their desired task, by providing them the required information at the required time without the need to refer to paper manuals, terminals, or a laptop computer.

This investigation will address the following research questions:

  1. What is the benefit of employing projector-based augmented reality to hand welding tasks in terms of time and precision of welds?
  2. How can the current stationary laser data projectors be enhanced to accommodate the projection onto objects on moving assembly lines?
